Poker

Poker is a card game played by a group of players. One player, on rotation per game, makes a minimum bet and the rest place their chips in the pot. The cards are then dealt and a round of betting takes place. The highest ranked hand wins the pot.

Poker can be played in many different ways and the rules vary according to the particular poker variant being played. The best known hands are the Royal Flush (Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10 of the same suit), Four of a Kind (three cards of the same rank plus two matching cards of another rank); Straight (five consecutive cards of the same suit but not in a sequence); Flush (five cards of the same suit); Three of a Kind; Pair (two cards of the same rank). The highest hand wins.

During a hand the player may say “I call” to match the previous player’s bet. Then he or she will place the same amount of chips in the pot. He may also raise the bet.

A player may discard any of his or her cards and draw replacements from the deck to build a new hand. Then he or she will reveal the new hand and another round of betting takes place. Depending on the specific rules, a player can also fold his or her cards at any time. Often this is done when a player has a bad hand and does not want to risk losing more money.
